Fairy tale themed art show
Hi

I'm Connie Toebe. I'm a visual artist who posts here occasionally. (If you haven't seen my artwork you can find it here: www.connietoebe.com )

I'm writing because a woman I know, who runs an art gallery in the suburbs of Chicago, is thinking about having a fairy tale themed show. This would be for fine art responses to fairy tales, much like what is in Tales magazine which was mentioned here a while back.

Things are pretty loose at this point. The show would probably be next spring. I figured that there are other visual artists here that would enjoy the opportunity to show fairy tale themed art. I certainly haven't heard of many (any?) shows of this kind.

If you think you are interested drop me line. I'm putting together a list of artists for consideration. My email is artwork@connietoebe.com

fairy tale art, etc.
dear Connie,
This sounds a great idea ! I am a poet not an artist but a lot of my poetry is born from images(isn't all poetry ? otherwise it's just a language game). I hope you get lots of interest and support.

Also, I've just been looking at your wonderful website and am delighted to find that you are a Remedios Varo lover as well. She is hardly known at all in Britain where I live-rather more in America, I believe-but I discovered her by very happy chance 3 and a half years ago. Those paintings -beautiful, luminous, eerie, unsettling. They have everything . I feel, when looking at them, that some of my own weird mind-processes have been translated onto canvas, something I have felt with no other painter! Anyway, Connie, I love your boxes and your photographs-do you do prints of the wolf one ?-I feel it captures all we feel about the wolf-fear, mystery, power, something half-glimpsed through the window on a winter's night. Superb. Thank you.

Interestingly enough, many of my ideas come from reading. These things definitely go both ways.

I most certainly have prints of my photos. If you are interested in one, email me and I'll send you all the details.

As for Remedios Varo, she's just wonderful isn't she. I had the good fortune to see a show of her work a few years ago. It was at the Mexican Fine Arts Museum here in Chicago. It was just amazing. If you don't have it already, there is a wonderful book by Janet Kaplan about her, called "Unexpected Journeys: The Art and Life of Remedios Varo". There was also a really nice catalog from the show I saw. I'll check for the name of it when I get home tonite.

Yes, I do have the Unexpected Journeys book-a must-have, I think, for anyone interested in this artist. Do you also have her Catalogue Raisonne ? It's 4 scholarly articles in both English and Spanish, 126 black-and-white reproductions and, joy of joys, 183 colour reproductions. It can be ordered from a Mexican website called honmex.com/eros/varo/books. It ain't cheap but it's worth it and it arrived on my doorstep in England almost before I placed the order !
Thank you, again, Connie. I will email you about the prints.

Boxes of Delight
Hi Connie

I like your Box Gallery pics on your website.
I think my favourites were the three in the top row.
A few years ago, I had a few pieces in a Box Exhibition, though with an Archaeological theme, and I found it to be quite interesting and satisfying working within the space of a box. Occasionally, the box was a bit fiddly to work in, but on the whole it worked well, so I can understand your fondness for using them.

I'm an illustrator, and I might be interested in participating in the exhibition that you mentioned. I'm a little bit busy at the moment though as I have a tonne of work, and I'm heading off to India in a few days. I'll email you when I get back.

Cheers
Celeste

Re: Themed and interstitial
Hi Connie,

This sounds like a great show! I was at the Mythic Journeys conference in Atlanta and they had a wonderful show of mythic art--interstitial only because despite the single theme, there was such an incredible variety of artists--from Terri Windling's fairy tale work (Terri is traveling now but I know she will check into this thread by the end of the week--it's too close to home!!) Charles Vess's art work, Stu Jenk's photographs and installation, Roxanne Swentzell's amazing sculptures along with Aboriginal artists and Huichol/Tepehuano artists. Do keep me posted about this exhibit as I would love to promote it on both the Endicott Bulletin Board but also the Interstitial Arts Website when its ready--especially if there is a wide range of art and mediums being used as part of the exhibit. Hmmm...could you email me about the show? It might be fun to offer a bit of assistence...

Re: Themed and interstitial
Connie, the fairy tale show sounds fascinating. I think I mentioned this before, but if you folks need help with text for a catalog or promotional materials, let me know -- you've got my email address. (Do you have the new one? If you've only got the old, dead one, which ends with "@compuserve.com," let me know and I'll send you the new one.)

Rosyelf, I'm a big Remedios Varo fan too. Varo and her good friend Leonora Carrington were to some extent an inspiration for a character in a novel I wrote a few years ago called The Wood Wife.

Yikes! I'm off the net for one day and suddenly I get all these responses. I'll just go in order.

Rosyelf - How could you tell me about her catalog raisonne??!! Waa! You know of course that I already told my husband about it. (Birthday, anniversary - hint, hint). Thanks for the link.

Celeste - There's no rush. The show would probably be next February so enjoy your trip to India and just email me when you get back.

Midori - I'll send you an email with more information about the show later today. You'll have to tell me about the Mythic Journeys conference. I was dying to go but already spent my vacation money this year.

Terri - I sent you an email about the show the other day but I assume it went to your old address since you didn't receive it. Just write me and I'll get the email sent back out to you.

I'll just say again, if anyone is interesting in taking part, email me at artwork@connietoebe.com . The show is wide open right now so the more the merrier.

Re: fairy tale show, etc.
Terri,

I hope you would also consider showing some of your work? It's so beautiful. Since it's in Chicago...maybe before you head out to England, if you want ship a piece (or two) to me and I will drive it down to the show myself and then pick it up.

Photographs, and Remedios Varo -again
Connie,
Just a note-I haven't forgotten about emailing you about your wonderful photographs. It's been one of those weeks when everything happens-well, almost-but I hope to get round to it in the next few days.
Also, remedios Varo. A while ago I wrote a group of poems about her and her work-would you be interested in seeing it ? It's 18 or 19 poems-some published, some not(yet)-so I think good old snail-mail would be better than email.Only if you want, naturally. My email address, if you're interested, is shamilton1@cwctv.net. This applies to any other interested parties, also ! I never cease to be amazed at the warmth and intelligence and creativity of the people who post here.

Re: Fairy tale themed art show
Would there be any interest in 3D things?

Would what I do fit in? My web site is www.KEdwardsStudio.com. It is pretty tame stuff, but it is all original hand built ceramic. I am new to this site, so I am unsure if this is an open invitation or not.
