"The Blue Book Of Fairy Tales". Anyone remember?
Does anyone remember this from their childhood? It has nothing to do with Andrew Lang's series; rather, it's a Little Golden Book of three fairy tales with lovely illustrations.
This was the first place, ever, that I read the Beauty and the Beast story. The others were "Rapunzel" and "Toads and Diamonds". Though they were condensed, it didn't skimp on some important parts, like Rapunzel's prince being blinded.
But it was "Beauty and the Beast" that really stuck with me. I remember Beauty's long, beautiful red hair, and, most of all, the appearance of the Beast...a sort of purple boar-man with long tusks and a wild mane. The illustration I remember best is of the Beast weeping after Beauty has rejected one of his marriage proposals, and Beauty trying to console him by telling him "Although I am not in love with you, I shall be your friend."
Just incredible. Don't know if it's still in print, though.

I know it!
I have a copy of that book; interestingly enough, my mother says the pictures are actually a knock-off of a different set. Or maybe that's what they are a knock-off of...I can't remember if my copy is actually called the 'Blue Book of Fairy Tales'.

Any idea when the book was released (without prying into your age!)
Name of the illustrator?

Sorry...
Wish I did. I don't even know if my old copy is anywhere in my parents' house.

Re: Sorry...
"The Blue Book of Fairy Tales" was published by Golden Press in 1959. Gordon Laite is the illustrator. You can find several copies for sale on www.bookfinder.com.
It was apparently reprinted by Western in 1990 as "My Little Golden Book Of Fairy Tales" but I've only seen that in once source so consider it unverified.
