Basilisks.
About basilisks. Was it YOU looking at IT that killed? Or was IT looking at YOU that killed? i.e., could a farmer be minding his own business when suddenly he drops dead, because a basilisk happened to be ambling by and have looked at his back? Anybody know?

Basilisks ...
Traditionally, it requires eye contact ... so, the hypothetical farmer would be all right unless he felt the need to look deeply into its beady littl eyes.

In some versions, the Basilisks gaze was able to wither plants and split boulders as well, so that it was said to live in a desert of it's own making.
Other sources, though, say that this was because of it's noxious
breath
