The meaning(s) behind the gentian flower
Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone knew about any symbolic meanings behind the gentian flower. I'm writing a paper for a literature class and the story I'm analyzing is about death and mentions gentians in one of the chapters.
Thanks for any help you might be able to offer! I really appreciate it!

Re: The meaning(s) behind the gentian flower
I'm not sure about symbolism, but it's supposed to be a homeopathic
remedy for depression.

symbolism
I think that it is supposed to have religious symbolism - it somehow links to the Virgin and to the Passion - but I am only vaguely remembering an art history class discussion, so I may very well have the flowers mixed up!

meaning of Gentian
In one of my 'meaning of flowers' books it lists the Gentian as connoting "You are Unjust". It also says that the origin of its meaning is not known and perhaps was so called by a disappointed gardener, (it CAN be tempermental to grow...).
The flower itself is said to be named after Gentius, King of Illyria, who used the flower for medical purposes.
If you do a quick google (say, "flower meanings - gentian") you can find a long list of sites who give other definitions, ranging from: injustice to loveliness, integrity, virgin pride and intrinsic worth.
I've never found a definative source for flower meanings (has any one else out there?) - and I know their meanings change depending on the era and their usage... So maybe you can google a search that covers the meanings of flowers closer to the decade and geographical area your story is depicting?
Good luck,
Tara
