 Peter Pan
There is a fabulous article on Peter Pan, JM Barrie, and Finding
Neverland by Anthony Lane in the Nov 22 issue of The New Yorker,
              available online here: newyorker.com/critics/atlarge/?041122crat_atlarge

It's so much better than the article on Peter Pan & Barrie that I just wrote for Realms of Fantasy that I am pea-green with envy. What a guy, that Lane.

Thanks for posting that Terri! I hadn't known that about Barrie and his stories. It'll be a great help on a project I'm working on! And when will your article be out?

 Re: *subject*
It's in the next issue of Realms of Fantasy magazine, which ought
to be out soon. It will also be available in the Winter issue of
the Endicott Journal of Mythic Arts (www.endicott-studio.com),
which will go online in mid December. I wrote it long before reading
Anthony Lane's article...but I'm afraid that there's little in it
              that Lane hasn't now covered.

If you want to know more about Barrie, Andrew Birkin's book JM Barrie and the Lost Boys is terrific, as is his 4-hour BBC television docu-drama about Barrie, The Lost Boys -- which sticks to the facts of Barrie's life, unlike Finding Neverland, which, Hollywood-style, changes the facts around in order to tell a more romantic story. The Lost Boys is available on DVD here in the UK; I'm not sure about whether it's available in the States. Amazon doesn't list it on either DVD or VHS -- but Anthony Lane refers to it in his article as if it is available, so maybe there is a U.S. source for it. It's fascinating and very moving.

Also, Andrew Birkin has an extensive web site on which he generously makes all his source material for the book and film available to Barrie fans and scholars: journals, letters, photographs, etc. -- many of which came into his possession through his friendship with the last "Lost Boy," Nico Lewellyn Davies.

Thanks for pointing us to that New Yorker article, Terri--I had missed it. It is super. (Though I am sure yours will be, too!)

I'd still love to read your's to see your ideas on the story, Terri. I've read your work on the Endicott site and thought it was great. And thank you for the website- The pictures on it have given me so many ideas for costumes and different colors to work with!

A.S. Byatt reviews Finding Neverland in the Guardian ... you can read it here:

              books.guardian.co.uk/revi...03,00.html

I've yet to see the movie myself (I'm taking my pre-orals in a week, so time is of the essence), so I can't say much about her views on it, but her analysis of Barrie's motivations is, as usual, cogent and incisive.

Thanks for posting the Byatt piece, Helen.

I, too, wanted to see Finding Neverland, but it was only in town for a couple of weeks. Apparently they needed the extra screens for "National Treasure." I'm slightly bitter--why must good movies start coming out at precisely the time of year when I absolutely have to finish papers & projects? Another reason to get out of school, I think.

And best of luck on the pre-orals!!!
