animation within feature film
writing a dissertation on animation and how it works within non animated feature film. Im doing case studies of "Kill Bill" and "The Red shoes". Does anyone know any sites or publications to look at ?..or in fact any more material that has an animation sequence which either fits or seems out of place within the movie. I am in a bit of a rut with the dissertation proposal because it seems i might be trying to talk about too much as i also want to talk about the technological advancement of computer generated animation with comparison to clasical animation with regerence to pixar disney and dreamworks animations. Would really appreciate any feedback!

animation
The classic sequence I think of (very different from the films you mentioned) is the chalk-drawing scene from "Mary Poppins."

Some others:
"Pink Floyd: The Wall"
"Cool World"
"Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Hitchcock's "Spellbound," sort of
"Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," sort of
IIRC, there's an animation sequence in one of the Beatles films
"9 to 5" has a Snow White-inspired dream sequence with animation
"The Incredible Mr. Limpet" (Don Knots fish movie)

And if you want to stretch a bit, the newer Star Wars films were rife with animation (JarJar, the CGI Clone Troopers, etc).

Re: animation
There's also "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." I also remember a Gene Kelly film where he dances with Jerry from Tom and Jerry--but the name, year, story of the film escape me.

I love "9 to 5"- the fantasies about how they would kill the boss is my favorite part!

I just saw a music video ("Look What You Have Done") by a band called Jet. It isn't a feature film but the animation in it is out of place. It starts with a Disney-ish Snow White setting in the woods and all the cute animals coming out to see the band, but then they start fighting and something bigger attacks them.
Kinda gave me the creeps... :(

The Gene Kelly movie is Anchors Aweigh and is still pretty amazing today, IMHO. The dance sequence that is, considering it was 1945! The movie itself fails to keep my interest. I just watch that one for the dance scenes.

Supposedly Kelly wanted to dance with Mickey Mouse but Disney refused to give permission so MGM was forced to pick one of its own animated stars, Jerry the Mouse.

Thank you, Heidi! Trying to remember the film was driving me crazy.

I also remember "Tron" (sp?) as being cutting edge in its time (late 1980s?). The original "Fantasia" had a sequence with Mickey Mouse interacting with the live orchestra.

Best,
Alice

Alice in Cartoonland
Alice in Cartoonland is the earliest live action/animation mix I know of. (Walt Disney's earliest stuff, 1925)

Plot integration v. separate
I always think of the effect that animated titles have on live action films (The Lady Eve; The Pink Panther). They sometimes set a tone without being integrated into the actual works. Sometimes they take on a life of their own.

Don't forget fluff animation, i.e., the mouse dancing with Gene Kelly or even Mary Poppins - although a little more into the plot there.
