mentor tales
Hey, I've been drifting in and out of here for a while, but didn't
get up guts to post until now. I'm looking for source material for
a story. I'm interested in myths/fairy tales/folklore about an older
person mentoring a younger person, specifically an older male and
a younger male. I checked an anthology of samurai tales out of the
library a couple of years ago that has some of what I'm looking
for, but I'm sure there's more out there. I'm also thinking of things
along the lines of _The
Sword in the Stone_, except for "original" stories,
not someone else's reworking of them. Any suggestions?

Re: mentor tales
This is not a suggestion for a specific book or story, but many Native American folklore tales deal with mentoring relationships. The tradition in the various cultures seems to support the importance of such relationships to young and old alike. Likewise, many Asian cultural traditions also highlight the mentor/apprentice bond. I wish I had more concrete advice; I'm sure someone here will be able to guide you to what you're looking for.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of Native American tales. I'll have to do some poking around.
