twisted fairy tales & nursery rhymes, oh my!
hey everyone
i'm new here, been spending the last few hours wandering around
and thoroughly enjoying the conversations... some fascinating reads!
i was wondering whether y'all could give me a hand... a friend and i are having a combined birthday party at the end of june and were thinking of a theme of "twisted fairy tales & nursery rhymes"...
i.e. people dress up as one of the characters from a story, only
with a twist... adult versions/silly versions/unusual ideas... e.g.
a princess carrying a golden ball and eating frog legs
we're decorating and catering and giving out prizes as well, and
i was wondering whether anybody had any ideas to offer?
suggestions for characters/invites/imagery/food/drink/music/prizes
would all be vastly appreciated!
thanks and i look forward to your responses!!

Re: twisted fairy tales & nursery rhymes, oh my!
Hmm - well, I'd definitely love to see someone come as a Baba Yage figure in some sort of a "walking house" on chicken feet costume (drumsticks?). Or perhaps a Snow White who exaggerated the elements of necrophilia in the original tale? A Sleeping Beauty from the Basile version, with twins in hand, or a Rapunzel wearing a dress that was suspiciously tight around the middle might make for a fun nod towards the censors of the past. Erm ... a larcenous Hansel and Gretel pair who might walk around stealing the food off of people's plates, a Cinderella whose prince amplifies his foot fetish to astonishing degrees, a Little Red Riding Hood who's really getting along with her wolf, a la Delarue ... these are all possibilities. What a lovely idea for a party!

Goldilocks, who can't stop herself from trying three of everything finally saying 'This is just right' or opening doors, boxes and all other things that should be closed.
Puss-n-Boots, hrnmm, feline cat costume with thigh highs?

You might want to look at Fractured
Fairy Tales by A.J. Jacobs -- the stories may give you ideas.
If you can rent the original versions from the Rocky and Bullwinkle
Show, that may be even better.
Good luck.

I KNOW!!! this was one of my ideas for my own costume... not sure
if i can carry off the blatant sexiness of it all, but still!! thigh
highs and a breeches or a short skirt with a riding crop
also, red riding hood as a bikie chick?

I think bobbing for "poisoned" apples would be a fun addition. You could even have the old crone standing near by. What about a Grandma, dressed in nothing but old-fashioned under-garments, who goes around and asks where her clothes are; after all, we all know the Wolf has them. And speaking of Wolf, why not even have a Big Bad Wolf dressed in drag. A Cinderella who "rides" in a golden coach that comes up to her waist, or a Witch who carries a gingerbread house over her shoulders, with her head sticking out the door would definetely get a few good laughs. The possibilites are endless!
