Segur's Beast
I'm searching for the full color, full page illustration of Beast, as well as the pinkish drawing of Beauty and her Beast. Do you know which printing(s) of "The Fairy Tale Book" (now published as The Golden Book Of Fairy Tales)contained that beautiful picture?

Adrienne Segur's Beast
Hmmm, I've never seen a picture of the Beast alone by Segur. I own the first American publication of The Fairy Tale Book illustrated by Segur (recently reprinted under the title The Golden Book of Fairy Tales), and I also have a copy of the original French edition. Both contain only one Beauty and the Beast illustration: the pink-background pencil drawing of Beauty with the Beast's head in her lap. (This picture: [link]www.endicott-studio.com/forbewty.html[/link].) If there's been a second Beast picture by Segur published somewhere, I'd love to see it.
We posted a tribute page to Segur last year on the Endicott web
site: www.endicott-studio.com/jMA03Summer/segur.html
. Since then, I've come into possession of a number of French fairy
tale volumes by Segur, found in an old bookshop in Lyon. These contain
many pictures that have never been published in the two U.S. editions
(The Golden Book of Fairy Tales and The Snow Queen).
When time permits, we'll add a few of these to Endicott's Segur
tribute page. The Golden Book of Fairy Tales contained her
very best illustrations, but there were many other good ones too
-- particularly in a book devoted to Hans Christian Andersen's tales,
including lovely illos for The Little Mermaid.

Re: Adrienne Segur's Beast
Terri,
Would you please post it here when/if you put additional Segur illustrations on the Endicott site? I would *love* to see those!

Segur's Beast
Thank you, Terri for your response. There is in fact a gorgeous illustration of Beast, alone. He's covered in jewels and fine clothing; looking quite regal... and sad. I vividly remember the picture from the library copy I borrowed over and over so many years ago. At this point I might have thought I'd dreamt about it BUT 2 weeks ago at Powell's (in Portland, OR.), a clerk in the Children's department and I had a conversation about just that! I did'nt realize that it would'nt turn up in The Golden Book Of Fairy Tales, which I was ordering. She did'nt seem aware of it either as it IS in her own original copy!
