Does anybody remember this tv series?
As a child growing up in Britain in the 1980's I recall a television series broadcast on Children's ITV entitled "Storybook International". Each episode-preceded by an animated sequence depicting a fox that suddenly turned into a medieval troubadour (or was it the other way around? It was a long time ago),-re enacted an old fairy-tale or folk-tale with live actors and was filmed on location in the country of each tale's origin. The series used tales from all over the world and included adaptations of "Cap O' Rushes"(a variant of Cinderella/Donkey-skin) and "The Well of the World's End"(a variant of the Frog-king). The series (which should not be confused with "Shelley Duvall's fairytale theater" or Jim Henson's "The Story-teller") has haunted me ever since yet I can find little information on it anywhere?
I can find scant information about it on the Internet (it isn't even listed on the Internet Movie Database) or in any books apart from a brief mention in "The companion to cult children's' TV". All I know is that it was released through the British production company HTV sometime around 1981-1987 and has since been screened on US television, but never again here in the UK. Does anybody at Surlalune recall "Storybook International" or know where any copies of the series can be purchased?

trying to help!
I'M A STORY TELLER, AND MY STORIES MUST BE TOLD.
I HAVE MANY STORIES, TALES FOR BOTH THE YOUNG AND OLD.
THROUGH MY MANY TRAVELS I HAVE GATHERED THESE TALES,
TO TEACH YOU GOOD SENSE, WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS.
SOMETIMES THERE ARE TEARS, SOMETIMES THERE IS LAUGHTER,
BUT ALWAYS, A HAPPILY EVER AFTER.

a listing of all the episodes are at

media.stan-co.k12.ca.us/h...wwi770.htm

with a brief description (and seem to be available for sale to schools?)

as for actually obtaining the videos...
depending on where you live, and if you haven't tried already, check the library systems.

for example:
the Manatee Community College of Venice, Florida

www.mccfl.edu/

has all of the videos from this series, held at the campus library as Humanities Visual Resources

www.mccfl.edu/Faculty/Jon...ideos.html

(listed under Cultural History Series)
admittedly it's a very, very long shot, and i have no idea about copy write law, but perhaps you could obtain copies, or further information, from them?

sorry i couldn't be of more concrete help. hopefully collective nostalgic demand will resurrect this program as a dvd (much like the Cannon Movie Tales).

good luck!

Re: trying to help!
Oh my goodness! I was just having a conversation with someone last week about this series from my childhood, but for the life of me I could not remember the title of the series. Thank you for this thread! And the links!

Thank-you for your replies Gormghlaith and Niniane. I was starting to think that this series was just a figment of my imagination.

The narrator of Storybook International?
I think I remember this show. I remember the narrator of each episode had a very distinct voice. It sounded like that of an old woman, and it had a haunting, mystical quality to it. Does anyone else remember the narrator?

This show brings back loads of childhood memories for me, as well!
