 | Victorian England I'm looking for information on Victorian era fairy tales for my class on gender roles in Victorian England. We're allowed to pick topics for our papers, though, so I figured I'd do something interesting to me.
I've been given a couple of suggestions already, but from what I've found, fairy tales didn't come to England as much until the end of the Victorian Age and after.
Does anyone have suggestions for source material?
 Thanks.

 | Re: Victorian England You might start with at least a perusal of Michael Hearn's "The Victorian Fairy Tale Book." A copy is available in many libraries and larger bookstores. Here's a link to it on Amazon:

 Harder to find are:

Forbidden Journeys: Fairy Tales and Fantasies by Victorian Women Writers
by Nina Auerbach (Editor), U.C. Knoepflmacher (Editor)

Victorian Fairy Tales: The Revolt of the Fairies and Elves
 by Jack David Zipes

 | Re: Victorian England An interesting book is "The Boy Who Saw True", the diary/autobiography of a victorian boy who could actually see elves, fairies and spirits.

 | Re: Victorian England Thanks for the suggestions. The Zipes and Hearn had been recommended to me already; I just didn't have the names in front of me. But the Auerbach sounds good, too.
These will definitely give me a start, and hopefully I can narrow down an actual topic with them.

 | Re: Victorian England There is a short article on Victorian Fantasies on the Endicott
              site (www.endicott-studio.com/forvctf.html).
It's not specifically about fairy tales, but maybe it will help.

As Heidi has mentioned, Forbidden Journeys is well worth tracking down.
