Mother Holly
I'm interested in the story Mother Holly. I saw a closed discussion that ended last April. I didn't see any reference to stories with the same theme found in different cultures. I know there's a Japanese story and an American version. Any others?

Mother Holly
I recently purchased a book by this title retold by John Warren
Stewig and illustrated by Johanna Westerman. The book makes references
to the grimms version in the book "kinder-und hausmarchen",
a retelling by alison lurie entitled "clever gretchen and other
forgotten tales". An english version appeared in Household
Stories (Dover 1963) under the name of "Mother Hulda"
. You might want to check these titles out for variants of this
tale. I recommend the book i mentioned earlier due to the fantastic
illustrations and clever weaving of the numerous versions of the
tale into one single version. Best of luck!

Re: Mother Holly
It's one of my favorite stories. I've seen several versions in Lang, iirc. You might search at Laura Gibbs's Lang site (I've lost the new url) for key words like 'feathers', Holle, Hulda.
I think it connects with Burroughs's Pellucidar and a place ruled by the goddes 'Hel', and with the Ellysian Fields underground in the Aeniad.
I've used it in two of my stories:
