Media sightings
This evening’s episode of Enterprise was a take on Beauty
and the Beast with young Asian Ensign Sato and a menacing alien.
The franchise has done these plots before (Crusher and her ghost
lover in TNG), but this is the first one I’ve caught as
an adult thinking about folklore issues. Did anyone else see it?
And on a more amusing note, I stumbled on a set of fairy tale lingerie this evening (I’m newly engaged and the overall site was linked for its “bridal” section – if you can call it that!). Lots of fairies, take-offs of licensed characters, and nursery rhyme folks, but not as much on the actual fairy tales (scroll down to find those) – relates to our perennial discussions of what is and is not “fairy tale.” It’s a saucy site, though not filthy – I’d say 2 out of 3. I’m sure more of this sort of thing must exist, but I hadn’t considered it much before – or looked for more of the characters we know (Sleeping Beauty, etc.). Anyone given any thought to this variation on dressing up as your favorite character?

Well, if one were planning an evening of "Shepherdess and the outlaw", or "Red Ridinghood and the Wolf"...these, uh, might come in handy.

Costumes ...
You know, this issue has actually been on my mind ... a few weeks ago, I wandered into a Halloweeen store to browse, and I came across a number of similarly themed "fairy tale" costumes (come to think of it, the "Snow White" version from the site is suspiciously familiar). I found them vaguely disturbing, particularly the Disney themed ones - I may be oversensitive, but to me, there seems to a sort of one-step-remove pedophilia at work in their design. The more generalized costumes, the ones that haven't been "fixed" in a common aesthetic view that's specifically associated with childhood - there's no broad-based version of Little Red Riding Hood, for example - don't bother me overmuch. But a version of Snow White (a costume that was arranged in the store in a "child" version that was fairly demure alongside the "adult" version with garters) that evokes not only the fairy tale but also a school girl ethos with its uncharacteristically short skirt coupled with knee socks squicks me out to the nth degree. It implies that, somehow, the wearer is embracing not just the fantasy, but the fantasy through a juvenile filter that's being tarted up to make it *more* sexy in a rather disturbing way. The implications are unpleasant ...
