A Stepmother, the most popular villian?
I've heard it said that a stepmother is the most popular fairy tale villian. I can think of only two stepmothers (Cinderella's and Snow White's). I challenge you to name three more fairy tales with stepmothers.
Drew
PS: The fairy tales can't be Cinderella or Snow White redos!

You should read some more tales
Hey there,
Why don't you read some more Grimms tales? There are many step-mothers.
Try "The Juniper Tree"; "Seven (six) Swans"; and "Hansel and Gretel".
Then there are others, like Vasilla the Fair. In fact, there are many step-mother stories.
There are also quite a few villian-mother stories, which were altered to step-mother stories, like Snow White. For an example that remains see Kate Crackernuts."
Enjoy!

13 in Grimm?
I think perhaps it was Maria Tatar who quoted someone else saying there were "countless" evil stepmothers in Grimm, and rather tartly said it was very easy to count them, there were thirteen.

You win!
Wow, I completely forgot about Hansel and Gretel! Thirteen? The so-called unlucky number.
Vasilla the Fair. Is this the same as Vasilisa the Beautiful?

I believe it is.
Vasilisa the Fair (excuse my previous misspelling - it was early). Yes, I believe it is the same story, probably just a different translation. Vasilisa married a tsar, but not before she takes on Baba Yaga. It is a great story because Baba Yaga is not the true villian, rather the step-mother is. Baba Yaga, while asking for the accomplishment of nearly impossible tasks, keeps her word when Vasilisa succeeds.

Almost forgot...
I almost forgot. "Vasilisa the Beautiful" or "Vasilisa the Fair" IS the same story . . . a retelling of Cinderella. So, there's no point in adding it to the list since it's just a different version of Cinderella.
