Online Fairy Tale Study and Survey
Dear Sir or Madam
My name is Rose Deo, and I am a postgraduate student at the School of
Psychology (University of Queensland, Australia). As part of my doctoral
studies I am conducting an online study that seeks to determine what elements
are present in fairy tales that contribute to their popularity as a genre of
literature. This will be assessed by evaluating a large cross-cultural sample
of fairy tales from areas such as India, Germany, Ireland, and Japan, and will
help to increase our understanding of fairy tales not only from a folkloristic
perspective, but also in terms of contemporary psychological theories of
discourse comprehension and story liking. The validity of the study depends
largely on the representativeness of the participating readers, which is why I
would like to ask if you would be willing to include a link to this study on
your web page.
Details of the study, including instructions are included in the URL, but in
brief, subjects are randomly assigned to one of 52 fairy tales that differ in
length from 1000 to 4750 words. They are asked to read the fairy tale, and to
complete a small number of rating scales at set points within the tale and at
its close. Subjects then complete a 38-item questionnaire (mainly rating
scales) that collects basic demographic data, such as age and gender, and
assesses how subjects felt about specific aspects of the story (e.g. specific
characters, underlying messages in the story). The time taken to complete the
study will vary according to the length of the fairy tale that is assigned,
but should take between 15 and 75 minutes.
The study has been cleared in accordance with the ethical review processes of
the University of Queensland (Ethical Clearance Number: 03-PSYCH-P-11) and
within the guidelines of the National Health and Medical Research Council. If
you have any questions or queries regarding the study you can contact me (Rose
Deo) via email (r.deo@psy.uq.edu.au), or alternatively
you can contact my supervisor, Dr Rod Ashton via email
(rsa@psy.uq.edu.au).
