Hi. New here, question about Puss in Boots
First off let me just say, WOW, what a great board you have here. I was amazed to find it. From what I have seen so far everyone seems very much on top of fairy tales, orgins and mythology. On top of that you all seem very nice and helpful.
Second, heh, this is not homework or for any paper.
I have a question about Puss in Boots, that I am hoping someone here might be able to answer, as I cannot find it on the web currently.
What year did Puss n Boots first appear in print? Was Puss n Boots an oral story first and are there any rough guesses on a year for its creation?
Thank you for your time, and thank you very much if you have an answer, very very much.
I will be hanging around here, but I don't have the literary background or historical background to answer the questions, but you do have a wonderful board.

Re: Hi. New here, question about Puss in Boots
Hi and welcome -
I'm not an expert on Puss and Boots, but my WORDSWORTH DICTIONARY OF PHRASE AND FABLE has this to say: (paraphrase not a direct quote)
La Chat Botte is from Straparola's NIGHTS, No.xi, (1530). It was translated into French from Italian For Perrault's LES CONTES de MA MERE L'OYE (1697). It was from this collection that the tale reached England.
However, in the introduction to the Perrault section of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST AND OTHER CLASSIC FRENCH FAIRY TALES, Jack Zipes writes that in 1696 Perrault started "transforming several popular folk tales, including all their superstitious beliefs and magic, into moralistic tales that would appeal to children and adults and demonstrate a modern approach to literature." (Zipes, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, New York: Signet, 1997. p. 3.) Zipes writes that Le Chat Botte (Puss in Boots) was published in 1697 in HISTOIRES OU CONTES DU TEMPS PASSE under the name of Pierre Perrault Darmancour, Perrault's son, which Perrault was probably using as a pseudonym.
Hope some of this helps.

Have you read this yet?
www.surlalunefairytales.c...story.html
And, yes, it did start out in oral tradition to the best of our knowledge.

Re: Hi. New here, question about Puss in Boots
Wow.
Thank you Laura and Heidi, thank you very much. That was very helpful. I have Perrault's version, thats the one I grew up with.
Heidi, Thank you for the site. Last night I only found the ezboards, I didn't know that you also had webpages and the history, so again, amazing site.
Puss always struck me as wrong being a male, maybe because of the deep rooted belief of cats = female, dogs = male...I am not sure. I am glad to know that Puss was at one time a female hero.
Thank you both.
