.
I would think Kirsten Dunst would be too young for Briar Rose -- but she was cast up to be 28 last year in The Cat's Meow and wasn't too bad.
I'd like to see someone tackle Robin McKinley's The Outlaws of Sherwood, but I know few people who even have *read* it, much less wanting to make a movie out of it. Does it count as fairy tale? Probably not . . .

If I remember correctly. . .
The main character--Becca Berlin--in BRIAR ROSE is in her early 20s. Working at her first job after college.

Film Adaptations...
I have a few movies that everyone might like to check out. First,
The Russian Cinema Council has just released three fairy tale DVD's
of the Snow Queen, The Princess and the Pea and the Little mermaid.
They are all from the late 1960's throught the late 1970's. I was
just watching the Snow Queen yesterday and I have to say the special
FX for that time are very impressive. I just bought The little mermaid
off of Buy.com so I will be expecting it either today or tommorrow.
All of them are live action and not cartoons althougt the snow queen
does incorporate some animated elements such as snow and blizzards,
very interesting and surreal. I also remember the Jim Henson verison
of the frog prince and I used to be very scared of Aunt Taminella,
I used to have nightmares about her. Cannon Movie Tales have put
out several fairy tale movies some are very rare like the frog prince,
beauty and the beast and hansel and gretel. I highly recommend these
movies to any fairy tale fan. I also won SNow WHite and the Three
Stooges off of Ebay. I saw it once and really enjoyed it. A very
different and unique version. There was also a SNow WHite film from
the 60's while it was dubbed, it was still a very good adaptation,
The Russian Cinema Council DVD's are also dubbed but don't take
away from enjoying the films. I have hundreds more of fairy tale
movies so if anyone wants to know more about a particular film,
I might have it.

New DVD release of Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast
Hi all,
I rented this from Netflix ( www.netflix.com ) since my local video store doesn't have it, and I had a chance to watch it last night. The DVD is fairly clear, but the subtitles are a bit annoying in light green lettering. Overall, though, the transfer is quite good and the sound is even and understandable. The DVD also has a version of the tale on it and a documentary.
For those of you who have never seen the movie, it remains the closest of all the B and the B stories to the original tale. The Beast is quite sympathetic, and despite the makeup, the actor plays the Beast in a wonderfully tortured way. No more or I will have to do a spoiler alert. For B and the B fans, you really should see this one.

books I would like to see on film
I would like to see Joan D. Vinge's The Snow Queen and The Summer Queen. I thought they were marvelous books. And Tanith Lee's White as Snow.

Tam Lin
I just heard a rumor from a friend in LA that Sony Pictures just announced they will be producing Tam Lin with Neil Gaiman as the writer, the Frouds as art designers, and Brenda Chapman and Roger Allers as directors (They worked on Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid and Lion King. Disney alum-- but with Gaiman and the Frouds I'm hoping for the best!).
