Kurosawa's Cure
Just saw a film by Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to Akira Kurosawa) called Cure which is like a twisted reworking of Bluebeard in a poststructuralist context. Think it was made in the 90s. It is really quite an unusual film, one of those movies where describing the specifics of the plot wouldn't do the film justice. I thought this might be of interest to Bluebeard fans.

how, like bluebeard?
How is it like bluebeard exactly?
Does the murderer have a blue beard and forbidden chamber/ is there a "bloody key as sign of disobedience" etc. or is it more to do with the murderer preying on young women?
I ask mainly because a lot of films that get compared with bluebeard are merely following the standard horror plot of having a serial killer who preys on women.
Thanks,

Re: how, like bluebeard?
Actually, I'm glad you asked, I should mention that it really departs from the standard version. First off, we don't just have a woman, we have a detective (who plays the larger role) and his wife who is receiving psychiatric care. In the 1st scene, she's reading a copy of Bluebeard and there's a short discussion w/her doctor. There's also one scene where the detective discovers the "bloody chamber" as it were, I'd have to rewatch it b/c I wasn't thinking of Bluebeard until after. Thematically though, the idea of needing to see the Other etc is there.
(paraphrasing Kurosawa) Cure is like a horror without suspense, fright and even shock. The film style is just... horror.... It's also a detective story, except inverted: we know all the facts surrounding the crimes, but we can't understand what happened.
Basically a whole bunch of ppl are murdering other ppl - they knew exactly what they were doing, they're not insane/possessed etc and they just don't know why. The connection is a young man who seems to have amnesia and a penchant for asking these people "who are you?" I know it sounds strange, it makes more sense to watch.
