Donkeyskin
Could anyone help tell me please some information on Donkeyskin and the how culture it comes from is reflected in it and what values it reflects?
Even just some useful web sites would be a big help.
Thankyou so much

You might start
by looking at the home web site. Then go from there. Also, why not look at some non-web sources. Maria Tartar's Classic Fairytales is a good source.

Donkeyskin
Donkeyskin is one of those stories that has its variant many cultures and countries. You will find its sisters under "Tattercoats" "Furball" "Katie Woodencloak" "Sapsorrow".

A quick search of teh archive should also bring up many older threads about this tale. But I agree that Helen's article on the Endicott Studio site is a great place to start. (Endicott-studio.com)

Flattered ...
Dear Ina and Midori:

Thank you both for the votes of confidence! I appreciate them enormously. For the original poster: there's a lot of material out there ... the best essays that I've encountered belong to Marina Warner (_From the Beast to the Blonde_) and Maria Tatar (_Off With Their Heads_). You might also want to look at some of the following:

Ideas and Values

Hi Midori and Helen
It's so nice to hear from two my favorite critics on Donkeyskin.
Regarding the main post; You could start by reading Midori's version Alerleirauh.
Donkeyskin or Alerleirauh is mainly about finding yourself (the inner woman) within the fur.
I also recommend Dr. Pinkola Estes's Women Who Run Wild With Wolves.
Just a bit of info about myself; Im a graduating student of comparative literature at the University of the Philippines. I'm not really much of a writer so it's really flattering to be chatting with you guys.

Midori--did you write a story using the title "Alerleirauh" too?

my story
Hi Jane Yolen
so sorry I meant Midori's version of Alerleirauh. The title is Tattercoats.

Tattercoats
My version of Tattercoats is a bit unusual...hmmm and rather erotic. It has a different spin than the traditional tale (which is about rites of passage into adulthood)--this is more about rediscovering the self--the ongoing rites of discovery I guess we make as adults, as married couples.

The tattercoats garment of many furs is about putting on a temporary alternative identity that in turn makes self-exploration possible.

Tattercoats
Midori,

I loved your version - for all the reasons you list as the description of your story. I have come across so few stories that deal with married couples in a positive and evolving (as well as erotic) way - yours was a delight.

Thank you again!

independence
My favorite of this type is "The She-Bear" from the Pentamerone. She became a real bear and had a lot of fun.
www.surlalunefairytales.c...r1911.html

What I see in most of these stories is independence, and not being ruled by appearances. The heroine doesn't ask for help, she doesn't even tell her troubles to strangers. She casts off the old life and tries to make a new life without luxury or status.

When she meets a prince, often she tests him and eludes him, till he has found her in her down-to-earth form and shown he can accept it also.
