Hello..I'm new...Introduction
Hello everyone!
I guess i should say a little something about myself re:
fairy tales:
When i was a young boy, I lived accross the street from my grandmother's house in New York City/Queens.
Every day she would make lunch for me and while i was eating, she would take out a fairy tale book (self contained or from a collection) and would read me a fairy tale out loud. This went on for probably 2 years from age 4-6 until our family moved away.
I reread some of the fairy tales when we would visit my
grandmother over the next 4-5 years. Other than that, I grew away from them until my senior year of college.
In that year, 1986, I took a great course on Folk Tales and Fairy Tales with Neils Ingwersen at the University of
Wisconsin. One of our main texts with the great Opie and Opie book on Classic Fairy Tales.
From 1987-1990, I was in the book store business and wound up managing a B. Daltons Bookstore where i always ordered fairy/folktale books for the store to keep
a good stock of them. Since 1990, My interest in folktales has mainly been in the fairy tales and my interest has fluxuated from intense to a minor interest
in cycles of a few years.
This year I am one of my intense fairy tale interest cycles again and have purchased some excellent books
including the hardcover Beauties, Beasts, and Enchantments by Jack Zipes, which covers the French
classics of Perrault and D'Aulnoy along with the other
greats.
I also have purchased the Red, Blue, and Violet Fairy Books by Andrew Lang, the Annotated Classic Fairy Tales by Maria Tatar, The Bros. Grimm collection by Jack
Zipes, British Folktales by Katharine Briggs, and finally,
the Russian tales by Avansev. I also own the Opie and Opie book, Folktales of the World by Richard Dorson,
Tales from Perrault, Best Loved Folktales by Jane Yolen,
The Pantheon Hans C. Anderson book, The Mammoth book of Fairy Tales, and a few versions of the Arabian
Nights tales.
Currently, I am married, have a masters degree in History, and reside in Southern California. Ok ..that's my
introduction!
So....Hiya!
Nice to meet all of you and I hope to join in some interesting conversations here!
Oh...and lastly....anyone recommend any other "classic"
fairy tale collection that has alot of analyses of the tales.
That is one area i am lacking in.

Hi Duglis
Glad that there is another 'newbie'.
I lived in London for a year, and used to go walking most weekends
to see what I could find. One weekend, on some little old street
I found a bookshop which had lots of old books for sale...One of
them was The Green Fairy Book by Andrew Lang, and I just love it
and love the illustrations - I think cost me about 6 pounds!
