Grandmother Spider
hello brilliant and light-filled story tellers,

i just tried searching on the site and found nothing on Grandmother Spider, the Native Indian First Woman.

Can anyone lend me some insight, some links or some references to enrich the basic story? It was received from a reliable source and relates the tale of how Grandmother Spider was the first woman and from her came Four Daughters: Brown, white, black and red, from whom sprouted the four families of man.

When her children go hungry, Grandmother Spider or Thought Woman begs to be killed and have her body dragged through the fields in order to feed her children.

i'm interested in images, or embellishments to this tale.

Much obliged,

judih

Aside...
Here again, is the number "4" as I mentioned in another
discussion on this board.

Here is a link to a Choctaw telling of the story:

Spiderwoman
Offsite, and maybe slightly tangential to your request, there's also the marvelous collection "Spider-Woman's Grandaughters" edited by Paula Gunn Allen.

Re: Spiderwoman
In addition to SWGS also see Paula Gunn Allen's novel The Woman Who Owned the Shadows. Many different Nations have Spider Woman stories; I think the most recorded would be the Navajo, Pueblo, Cherokee, Quiche Maya. Another good resource would be PGA's Grandmothers of the Light, which I borrowed shamelessly for my MA thesis.

Cheers,
Carolyn

PS Greg--- I still have my copy of Fitcher's Brides that needs signing!

Carolyn,
We'll have to get me to the west coast or you to a central location, or your book in the mail. *Some*thing can be worked out.
