Fary tales...with hidden meanings?
My mum said to me the other day, that fairy tales could be ways
of introducing small children to the hardship of life. As in, the
good vs. evil and the sad parts and happy ending. Could my mum be
right? Is there a hidden meaning in fairy tales?

Re: Fary tales...with hidden meanings?
God, where to start? In a word...yes. Folk and fairy tales are full of archetype and metaphor. You can read them as talking about certain *types* of people, emotions and situations, as much as about specific people, etc. When the young girl meets the old woman sitting on the river bank whose back is scarred and broken, and has to decide whether she'll do as the woman asks and scratch her ugly back, the story is in part about respect for old people, and in part about looking beyond superficial "ugliness" to see the real person beneath.
