Textbook Assistance
I am teaching a class in the fall called Psychology of Fairytales. I was wondering if you had any suggestions for texts. I wanted to make some sort of connections between archetypes and fairytales, and as I am searching, I was wondering if you had any suggestions on how to facilitate discussion, or any books that work with working with fairytales.
I would sincerely appreciate a suggestion, maybe a book, maybe a thought. Thank you for the time, and I enjoyed looking at your website: as that's where I got this address.
Thanks

Depending on the age of your students (and prevelent gender) Maria Warner's "From the Beast to the Blonde" (which is about the images of women in fairy tales--a wonderful social history--and a real favorite of the board!) or "No Go the Bogeyman" which is about men in the tales.
You might also glance at Harold Scheub's work--"Story" which is about African storytelling, but offers some really invaluable insights into the performance aspect of storytelling and in particular how the community views this activity and uses it, psychologically and collectively.

Re: texts
I also recommend the entry on Psychology and Fairy Tales in Jack Zipes' The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales.
And then there is Estes' "Women Who Run With the Wolves."
There's actually quite a bit. It's hard to narrow it down without knowing which "brand" of psychology is being embraced for the class.

If you teach Bettleheim's flawed (but influential) book The Uses of Enchantment, it's best to be familiar with all the controversy surrounding the volume. There are some good discussions of this in the archives for this board.
