Re: youngest brother/sister
Well, for starters....

Grimm's "The Queen Bee"

Various stories about the "Water of Life", including Calvino's "The Fine Greenbird."

"Ti-Jean and His Brothers," which you can find as a play by Derek Walcott. And I think that in "Fitcher's Bird," it's the youngest sister who saves them.

French fairy tales
Finette Cendrillon (I think it is by D'Aulnoy...) is fairly close to that type of tale. Although the girls are not exactally seeking their fortunes, Finette both saves her two elder sisters and finds her fortune. In D'Aulnoy's The White Cat, three brothers seek their fortunes. Although I don't remember that the younger brother doesn't save the older two, he does find his own fortune. By the way, did you ever finish your Tufty Ricky story? I would be very interested in seeing how it turned out.

A tale
There is a tale (Arabian Nights?) about three brothers that go to find a fountain that will help their father. Each follows a path, but ignores the advice of an elderly man. As a consequence, each brother turns into a stone. Finally, the youngest, who is also a girl, follows the path, heeds the advice of the old man, and gets the water from the fountain. In the process she saves her brothers. Sorry I can't remember the name of the story, but maybe someone else on the board does.

Re: A tale
In the Wiggin and Smith Arabian Nights - with illustrations by Maxfield Parish - I believe the story Jess posted about is called The Talking Bird? I could be wrong.
