Why you may be having a problem
Hey Otherworld,
I have checked my music resources (and I have tons on Stravinsky). It seems that Diagalov was inspired by several Russian folktales. Rather than pick just one, he mixed these and came up with his own story, which he then presented to Stravinsky. I am trying to figure out whether anyone cites the specific tales used for inspiration. There are several Phoenix folktales in Russian folk literature. I will try to help you out ASAP.
When is your workshop?

From the Munich Orchestra
The scenario for the "Firebird" was written by Mikhail Fokine (1880 - 1942), since 1909 one of the most important dancers and choreographers in Sergei Diaghilev´s "Ballets russes" company. Fokine´s libretto was derived from traditional Russian folklore, especially the sagas relating to Tsarevitch Ivan and the immortal sorcerer Kashchei.
Also, Fokine has an autobiography "Memoirs of a Ballet Master" (not a very humble man - lol).
Hope this gets the ball rolling.

One story
"Tzaravich Ivan, the firebird and the grey wolf" appears to be one story. You can find it in several places on the web. Also, there are some nice illustrations by Ivan Bilibin.

Mything Links has some great images from Russian Sunbirds. Plenty of stories as well. I think you'd find your answers there, as it's a very thorough site.
