the emperors new groove
This movie is not exactly a fairy tale, but it is kinda like one. It has manly fairy tale elements, like magic, and an evil witch, a good moral, etc. I really liked it, but was wondering where it took place. South America?

Place
The story is supposed to take place in S.A. The lead character is a llama or guanaco, which are both native to the Andes. I have no idea what the original "source" for the story is.

Source
I think it may have started as a re-telling of "The Emporer's New Clothes" but then suffered Disneyfication. I could be wrong.

Sniff...
Sadly disney continues to go down hill. I loved the videos as child, but The Emperor's New Groove makes me groan. It was supposed to be taken from The Emperor's New Clothes, but differed from the original considerably. Disney was permanently scarred when Dream Works split.

Emperor's and Disny
Leah. I have to comment that I don not aggree with what you say about the Hunchback or Pocahontas. You must first consider that the Hunchback nor Pocahontas are fairy tales. These are two of the better that Disney has put out in a while. They weren't spoiled by modern age technology nor do they really refer to anything such as a groove as Disney did with the emperor. What I am trying to say is that, would The Emperor's new clothes have been made sooner by Disnye, the outcome would be quite different. I would hate to see how they would do a Snow WHite or Sleeping Beauty in this day and age. Everything now is so commercialized with Disney that it ruins the original meaning of the story. I am not saying that SNow WHite or Sleeping beauty are the closest thing to the origanl stories but they are a whole lot better and some of Disney's best work.

disagreement
I must confess, that I disagree with the statement that Pocahontas and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are two of the better more recent Disney movies. Although they did not use much in the way of special effects, both stories strayed quite noticably from their sources. Half of my advanced placement U.S. History class thought that Pocahontas married John Smith, due to the Disney. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was never meant to be a children's story, and in an attempt to modify it for young audiences, became inane- bearing little resemblance to Hugo's masterpiece. I think that Leah is correct in supposing that the story of "The Emperor's New Groove" came from somewhere. Having seen the movie, I can readily say it bears NO resemblance to the story of The Emperor's New Clothes. So, what is the story? I don't know. Perhaps a traditional folktale from some South American country. Maybe Peru. I honestly don't know, but I liked the movie!

It has a llama and...
I've seen reviews referring to the Emperor being an Aztec...
Don't know if they were guessing or had a press pack with more info, though.

As I had said earlier, The Hunchback was not meant to be a children's story if you read my post. Disney is famous for putting out favorite fairy tales so I don't believe that the Emperor's new Groove is based on anything other than The Emperor';s New Clothes. People know that story! Disney NEVER claims to tell the stories they way they were originally told as in Pocahontas but the movie was still great and won awards. Th Emperor on the other hand did not. Disney is straying too much from their original favorite fairy tales which is why a lot of people are not watching their new movies. I personally don't feel that the Emperor was necessary to make the way they did. It clearly lead the way for un-needed sequels of Cinderella and others. I would take the older Disney movies over the newer ones any day.

For what it is worth
The movie "The Emperor's New Groove" was originally known as "Kingdom of the Sun." See: www.upcomingmovies.com/ki...hesun.html
