New Zealand, Maori fairy tales, folktales, myths?
Well, my fiance and I have decided to try and plan a trip to New Zealand for our honeymoon. Hopefully with the aid of friends and family as we have nothing else we need to register for at this time. *My* way of preparing is to learn whatever I can re: their fairy tales, folktales/folklore, or myths.

I haven't been able to find too much information so far from New Zealand or the Maori. What I have found is lumped together under Polynesian/Pacific, and I'm not sure how much of it is strictly New Zealand and how much relates to the general region.

Does anyone have favorite tales from NZ?

Sugarplum dreams,

Kerrie

Bone People
Kerrie,
While not strictly speaking fantasy--try Keri Hulme's "The Bone People." It won the Booker Award a decade or so back and is a rather interesting novel. Perhaps more Magic Realism than fantasy. Hulme is Maori.

Re: Bone People
I believe the Maori people only came to New Zealand relatively late in the piece - about the 1300's, so I imagine their folktales will have much in common with the Polynesian ones. The Maori were very different in the culture, lifestyle etc to the Australian Aborigines (I'm an Australian) and were a particularly war-like, warrior-oriented people - one of the reasons they had more success in fending off/dealing with the white invaders than did the Australian Aborigines. I imagine their folktales should reflect this. The countryside is spectactularly beautiful. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time.

These sites may be worth a look...

And who could forget Maui?
How Maui fished up the North Island
How Maui tamed the sun

Maybe there'll be something of interest there, if it's the sort of thing you were looking for. Hope you have a good trip out here too

Kerrie - I've just dug up a book titled 'A Concise Encyclopedia of Maori Legend and Myth' by Maragaret Orbell, Canterbury University Press, 1998. It covers pretty much everything, although as an encyclopedia, it's in alaphabetical rather than a more flowing narrative form.
