Im just starting to get into folklore adventure reading. Im reading the Lord of the Rings and may go back and read the hobbit. Im asking for some suggestions on some really good adventure books to read. I was told the (i believe its called)chronicles of narnia by cs lewis was good. Can anyone give some good suggestions on more books-more on the lines as the above
thanks so much.

Hey, totally go for the Chronicles of Narnia if you haven't read them yet. I would also suggest looking at books by Robin McKinley...if you look through the archives, I know there was a list a couple of months ago that had a lot of excellent reads on it.

Adventure
I love that term - it is how I used to refer to fantasy and historical fiction when I was a kid. With the exception of Lewis's anti-progressivism, the Narnia stories are magical. Read 'em. Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" is a great new trilogy - very unusual and involved. Definitely read The Hobbit - I prefer it to even Lord of the Rings. There's a lot to recommend. There are websites and magazines that will give you reviews and you can pick and choose what you like. Realms of Fantasy is a good zine you can find in bookstores or magazine racks. Enjoy!

adventure fantasy
You might also want to check out Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar books, which are classics of a different sort.

For zines, there is also BLACK GATE, which is a relatively new pro fiction zine aimed straight at adventure fantasy (unlike REALMS or FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION, which have a broader mandate). BG reputedly can be found at comics shops and at Barnes & Noble. I've never managed to set eyes on a copy, though I've been serially rewriting the ending of a story for the editor for what seems like years now. Issue #5 is due out in a few weeks.

favorite books
Does anyone remember the series by (I think) Susan Cooper? The first book of which was The Dark Is Rising. I loved that series as a young adult. I also loved the Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander. Of course that was long ago. I just remember reading them over and over again.

As to epic series -- I would strongly suggest the Belgariad. I've enjoyed David Eddings' characters and plot many times. And then The Mists of Avalon will always get my vote as well -- the book is long enough it might as well be an epic series.

The Dark, the Dark is rising...
I remember this series all too well. Beautiful writing, but a bit scary for me. (I get into my books a little too much sometimes.) I just read the series for the first time in 2001- and finished it either September 10th or 11th. It gave me a horrible sense of foreboding, which I couldn't shake. Not sure I'll reread them again any time soon, but that's only out of a sense of association.

Another great book is Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. LeGuin- part of the Earthsea series. I think it started as a trilogy, but she recently went back and did, I think, a prequel and a book of lore from the realm of Earthsea.

Sword and Sorcery
The other white meat. Falls more into the realm of adventure, it's true. Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, Jessica Amanda Salmonson, Karl Edward Wagner, Fritz Leiber, Edgar Rice Burroughs, early John Jakes, Lin Carter, L.Sprauge DeCamp, Avram Davison, Robert Moore Williams, Gardner F. Fox (I'm getting archaic here),and a whole host of others, ranging from great to not-so-great. I ate these alive in my high school days. I still hold a place for them in my heart. Many of these are harder to find these days, but there are a lot of newer ones; John Maddox Roberts, Glenn Cook, etc. Dig up Howard's Conan and Kull stories, and "Swordswoman," if you can find it. He is at the top of his craft.
