| important fairy tale question!!
I am extremly interested in the evolution of the oral tradition of fairy tales to todays.
I would be very very pleased if anyone could reply with some ideas or suggest some online texts that i could read.Thankyou.

important fairy tale question
Hello! Well, I have to say, that as fairy tales grow older and are
introdudced to more and more children, they lose a lot of their
primal, horrific qualities. In the original verison of Cinderella,
the stepsisters chop off thier heels and toes in order for the glass
slipper to fit, yet many people are not aware of these. So many
people are influenced by the Disney versions. Many even consider
these to be the definitive versions. A lot of the more graphic and
brutal elements are discarded so they are more safe for the ears
of children. As far as reading texts goes, you can probably type
up the name of any fairy tale and get a list of different versions.
I have done it many times myself. Maybe you could work it out from
there!

Not even close, I am afraid. That version is a sort of middle version. The earliest versions WE KNOW OF are Chinese and Egyptian and neither one has any chopping of feet or toes going on.The point is that, with folktales, we may know EARLIER versions but not EARLIEST. We can track the earliest WRITTEN version, but not the earliest ORAL one.
