What are everyone's favorite love stories in fairy tale, folklore, myth, legend, etc?

Favorite Love Stories
Wow, good question. I've never found any of the traditional fairy tale love stories to be that romantic. In myth I've always been fond of the Chinese/Japanese myth of the Weaver Maiden and the Shepherd Star. Sad, but sweet.
In modern fairy tales, you can't go wrong with Jane Yolen and Princess Heart O'Stone...and The Grey Horse by R.A. MacAvoy is gorgeous. I think my all time favorite literary couple would have to be Eddi and Phouka from War for the Oaks -- they're just so right together.
Happy Valentine's and Merry Lupercalia to you too!

Re: Favorite Love Stories
Oh, I was just thinking about how I needed to reread "The Grey Horse" again. I still have never learned what happened to R. A. MacAvoy. She has disappeared in publishing, unless she is now under a different name I don't know.
And I reread "War for the Oaks" just recently. I agree with all of your choices wholeheartedly.
My favorite love stories are numerous, so I hope everyone finds one to enjoy today.
Happy Valentine's Day to all!

Re: Favorite Love Stories
One of my favorite love stories was the "Yuki Onna" story from KWAIDAN, though it doesn't end well. Yet one can say the same for Romeo and Juliet, come to that.

More sad tales of love
Kerrie,
I told you recently in a post about one of my favorite myths of love. My favorite love story set to music is Wagner's "Tristin and Isolde". Again a sad ending, but what passion!
