Little Mermaid on SurLaLune
To celebrate five years on the web this month, I am adding an annotated version of The Little Mermaid to SurLaLune in the coming week or so. I have snuck a preliminary version, sans notes and history, up onto SurLalune in the past few days including modern interpretations and illustrations. If anyone is interested in a preview, feel free to visit at:
www.surlalunefairytales.com/littlemermaid
I am especially seeking recommendations for the modern interpretations area since I am sure I have missed several novels, poems, etc. (Jane, I have your Undine story and poem listed.)
Remember that this is a soft launch and not available from SurLaLune's front page yet. I hope to have most of it completed in the next week when it will go live to everyone else who hasn't read this post.
I am also completing some other long unfinished areas on SurLaLune
and adding more tales in the new year. This is what my unemployment
does for SurLaLune.

Little Mermaid
Would Alice Hoffman's Aquamarine qualify?
Francesca Lia Block has a short story in her Nymph (erotica) collection about a woman in a wheelchair who is a mermaid. It definitely has tones of Little Mermaid.

Reworkings of Little Mermaid
Heidi, some of the titles that we included in our discussion on this tale in Tales, Then and Now include:
Robin Morgan's The Mer-Child: A Legend for Children and Other Adults. 1991.
Jane's Undine
Charles de Lint's "OUr Lady of the Harbour" in Dreams Underfoot, 1993.
Pricilla Galloway's "The Voice of Love" in Truly Grim Tales, 1995.
Jane Gardam's "Pangs of Love" in the Armless Maiden and Other Tales for Childhood Survivors, 1995.
Munro Sickafoose's "Knives" in the same collection.
Dave Smed's "Foam" in REalms of Fantasy, Dec. 1995.
Barbara G. Walker's "The Littlest Mermaid" In Feminist Fairy Tales, 1996.
Emma Dooghue's "The Voice" in Kissing the Witch, 1997
Melissa Lee Shaw's "The SEa Hag" in Silver Birch, Blood Moon, 1999.
I don't have a listing of any newer titles than that at my finger tips.
Yours in stories,
Gail de Vos

Re: Reworkings of Little Mermaid
Thanks everyone!
I have completed the annotations for Little Mermaid and loaded them on the site. I still have to finish the history and tales related to the story, but the entire area is almost completed. Enjoy!

Re: Reworkings of Little Mermaid
I've never seen it discussed, but the video to Sade's song "No Ordinary Love" pretty clearly references "The Little Mermaid."
