Tom Thumb vs Little Thumbling/Hop o' my Thumb/Little Poucet
THE CLASSIC FAIRY TALES by the Opies has these stories as two separate fairy tales that are very different from each other. On the other hand, in
THE ANNOTATED CLASSIC FAIRY TALES by Maria Tatar, she says Tom Thumb is a better name for the Perrault story of Little Thumbling and renames it that. Was that
a mistake? Should she have renamed it Pierre le Poucet or something?
Be Well!

Re: Tom Thumb vs Little Thumbling/Hop o' my Thumb/Little Pou
Douglas,
I do not have the literary background to answer many of the historical questions.
However if you're just looking an unedjimikated opinion:
Is it possible that the name was changed to suit the english speaking audience, and thereby creating more of a following for those people who spoke english.
Honestly, deep down I relate better to the name Tom Thumb, than Pierre le Poucet. So, no, I do not think it was a mistake.
Val
PS - Nice to virtually meet you, too.

re:
Well i can tell you this:
I just read another version of the real Tom Thumb story
in Steel's ENGLISH FAIRYTALES book called THE HISTORY OF SIR THOMAS THUMB.....It is totally and
completely different than Perrault's HOP O' MY THUMB/
LITTLE THUMBLING/LITTLE POUCET and i now officially
will state that Ms. Tatar was wrong in retitling her
version of the Perrault story, TOM THUMB.
Shame!!!! Rename it , Maria, to Jean Thumbling or
Pierre le Poucet or Hopper Thumbster or something.....

Maybe I Can Help...
Tom Thumb is an Arthurian myth (King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, etc.) which is British. Hop O My Thumb is a Grimm's Fairy Tale (German). I recently read Hop O My Thumb, and found it to be extremely reminiscent of many other Grimm's Fairy Tales. There are occurences in this story that mirror Hansel and Gretel (the abondonment of the children), The Bremen Town Musicians (the spying of a far off light), Jack and the Beanstalk (the ogre and his wife), Snow White (the relevance of the number seven), and Sleeping Beauty (the seven league boots). Hop O My Thumb has a happy ending, whereas Tom Thumb does not. Hop O My Thumb lives happily with his brothers and family after tricking the ogre, while Tom Thumb dies after being bitten by a spider. I hope I was of some assistance.

No noooo! :)
Artsfan, I knew what you just told me all along.
My question is...If you know these facts and I know these facts...then why did Maria Tatar title the
Hop O' My Thumb story in her ANNOTATED CLASSIC FAIRY TALES book, Tom Thumb????????????
I think she shouldn't have done this and should correct it to something else in a reprinting..whether it is Hop O'
My Thumb, Little Poucet, Little Thumbling, Pierre le Poucet, Ding Dong Dingi, We Willie Winsome, anything!
Just not TOM THUMB..that's a different story altogether.
