Beauties, Beasts, and Enchantments Hardcover -Zipes A+
I just finished reading the hardcover version of this out of print book (the paperback removes a few stories including the long version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST by de Villeneuve)..
and I have to say this was the most enjoyable fairy tale
book i've read since Joanna Cole's huge book on tales collected from all over.
If you have to find the hardcover, I'd recommend it
highly because of the BEAUTY AND THE BEAST de Villeneuve story.
Very "French" Tales..great fairy tale atmosphere..classic.
You have to love costumes, jewels, balls, mischevious imps, and
nasty stepsisters

P.S.
P.S. It has all the Perrault tales save one in it and the bulk of d'Aulnoy's tales as well!

Re: P.S.
I second the nomination for anyone who hasn't found the full volume. It is a great book and even better than the paperback version. I finally tracked down my own copy since it is hard to find these days outside a library. I recommend www.bookfinder.com if you are looking for it. The rarity is frustrating but also testifies to the book's merits. No one wants to give up a copy of it.

re: Illustrations for Princess Camion
Heidi,
Do you know if there are any illustrations for
THE PRINCESS CAMION by Mlle de Lubert besides
the ones in the Zipes book we own?
It was such a bizarre kafa-esque trippy tale. I would
love to see some illustrations if anyone ever did any.
If you don't know..anyone else know?
be well all!

paperback
Doug,
I wish I'd known about the discrepancy in contents before I laid hands on the O/P trade edition.

re:
Yeah, well that's what i did. I purchased the paperback
version with a slightly different name (can't recall right
now). In the forward, Zipes states that he's sorry that
he had to remove the long version of Beauty and the Beast and a few other tales for the pb version.
When i read that i went, "Oh no!", and searched and
searched and found the hardcover version via the used
section of Amazon.com.

hardcover vs. softcover
I think that there must be a couple softcover editions, because the one that I have, published by Meridian/Penguin (1991), does have the de Villeneuve version of Beauty and the Beast. Was that the only difference? I tried to find the table of contents to the hardcover ed. online to compare them but didn't have any success.

re:
the hardcover has both versions of Beauty and the Beast
(de villeneuve and beaumont)
It has another story by Beaumont..i believe something
like Prince Desir..about a prince with a long nose.
and i believe 1 other one and about 4 more by d'Aulnoy..
maybe 5.
Doug
P.S. I'll post the hardcover table of contents at a later
time when i can type it all up

Thanks
Doug,
Thanks so much for taking the time to post the whole table of contents. It seems that the older paperback edition is complete as well. It is such a wonderful collection it's too bad they felt the need to remove stories in order to reprint it; if anything, they should have added more...

Re: Thanks
You know what I'm french and I'm looking for such a book for years. Lucky you. France is not a good place for fairy tales and fantasy lovers. You just can't find books of folk and fairy tales studies.

and tell me/us exactly which stories were omitted from
