Ella Enchanted in theatres August 8
In case anyone is interested or didn't know, yet another Cinderella is hitting the big screen this summer. Anne Hathaway, "The Princess Diaries," is in the title role of the screen adaptation of Gail Carson Levine's book, "Ella Enchanted." It should be a fun way to wrap up a Harry Potter themed summer...
I'm just disappointed because two of the popular books for young readers are "Holes" and "Ella Enchanted." I don't mind the movie versions being made, but I am disappointed the teachers will be reluctant to assign the stories for book reports, afraid the students will watch the movie and not read the book. Do you know how often I hear: "Teacher said it can't be a book that has been made into a movie! Has that one been made into a movie?"

For teachers and Heidi
My "method" around this, is that I try to have my kids read the book BEFORE the movie. I do this mostly because books are generally richer in character development, description and plot. Having done it several times, my children now agree with me and tend to read the book first. It doesn't always work. Sometimes they sneak the movie in (i.e. various Dumas and Twain works) before hand. Having been exposed to the book-movie issue, however, they seem quite capable of appreciating both and, even at their tender ages, critquing the differences, plot divergances, etc. You never know, by allowing them to read books made into movies, you might be developing future critics, screenwriters, directors, and authors of all kinds.
Can't wait to see Ella Enchanted.

Re: For teachers and Heidi
I'm in agreement, Jess. I just wish more of the teachers used that approach. Mostly, as a librarian, I run into the kids with a whole list of books to choose from for a book report--usually genre reports--which the teacher will not get to work as closely with so the books that have been made into movies are verboten. Its just hard to lose two of the most popular in one summer. : ) At least ABC has never aired their "Wrinkle in Time" so that one is still available and so is "The Westing Game." And I got Wrede's books onto a few lists although they haven't "medaled."
And there are the kids who will want to read the book since they saw the movie, too. That is the positive side I love. All 40+ copies of "Holes" in the system are checked out right now and not for an assignment that I've heard of. Although Sachar is a perennial favorite anyway.

The "Wrinkle in Time" mini-series
Heidi -
Do you know what happened with that mini-series? i.e. why it was never aired? From the promos, it looked like they had taken serious liberties with the book (drat!), but I was still interested in how that ended up...?

Re: The "Wrinkle in Time" mini-series
Tara,
According to L'Engle's website, the film is premiering at the Toronto Children's Film Festival at the end of this month, but no national airdate has been selected. I don't know what the delay has been, but I am interested in seeing it, too. Of course, it was promised over a year ago, so it could be anytime. As always, we are really at the mercy of the ratings gurus. Unless it is a real stinkeroo, I don't imagine we will see it before October or November at this point.

And how about this one?
I heard (a while ago) that Colfer's "Artemis Fowl" was being made into a movie... but haven't seen anything lately about it. Any word on that from those in the know?
