A very funny take on Fairy Tales
All,
I just finished reading a stack of comics and books that I picked up at the San Diego Comic Con.
The standout was a self-published comic narrative, MAX HAM, FAIRY TALE DETECTIVE by Frank Cammuso. It's a smallish, sguare bound comic with a broad cartoony drawing style (very reminecient of the Warner Bros. cartoons of the 1940's) that mixes panel to panel narrative with a children's book text and picture flow. Film Noir meets all the fairy tales characters that we know and love in a very humorous detective tale, THE BIG SHEEP.
I had a LOT of fun reading this!
Besides being hilariously funny, FTD uses it's fairy tale charactters to much better effect than the similarly themed but rather dour FABLES book from Vertigo.
Here's his website if you want to take a peek:

Enjoy!

Dang!
I was at the San Diego con - wish I'd seen these. But then, in two days, you're lucky if you can just cover all the booths and not have your eyes fall out of your face. I agree about Vertigo, with the exception of Hunter, which was formerly Books of Magic. It's literally the only comic from Vertigo I look forward to reading. It's really catching stride again with its new writer, Dylan Horrocks. Everything else is dismal splatterpunk stuff that was old ten years ago.
