nicknames for majicou and Terri (off topic +/-)
You know the magic of names is such that in our family, everyone has a diminutive that...the way I would put it to you, represents the genius (angel) nature they came to earth with, or accompanied them to earth, depending on which side of the family is speaking...... but then, you know we have a somewhat anachronistic family...did I say somewhat? grin. The genius is like the "good one" who sits on one's shoulder. You-know-who is said to be sitting on the other shoulder.
I was thinkng I would start online here a question about the power of names... soon.
to you Majicou, for Majicou, the diminutive, nickname, in my mind, must be Magico, pronounced however idosyncratically, as Mah-JEE-ko, which means in Spanish, not ordinary magic, but more so, with an article before it, mage and magician. In the sense I understand it and mean it here, the magician is not a slieght of hand operator, but often people cannot figure out this person's strategies for how they arrive at conclusions, ideas and outcomes. This is to be considered a gift.
And for Terri, it must be...from the swirls of my mind, (grin), since she has told us about "ze mysterious lov-air," it must be the diminutive Terez, which is pronounced as though one is about to dream: It is pronounced Terr-EZ with a beautiful set of rolling r's. And its meaning is "of the earth," from terre and tierra, one who has ideas and thoughts in which other people, creatures and other matters can be sheltered and develop. Terez is also the one who sees from "under" the earth upward into this world. One who carries this must be alert, for some others will only see the exploitability of such richness.
I do not know why these names for these persons. Though they might know. Do not ask me anything complicated, like how such names arrive. (grin) I am only the timepiece, not the jeweler.

Clarissa, I've been a huge fan of yours since you were required reading in the Myth, Symbol and Ritual course I took during my undergraduate years in the mid-nineties. I really appreciated your writing on the Mistaken Zygote, and on the Red Shoes--thank you for the work you do.
I'm going to be a total little kid here. Can I have a nickname too? Please, please?

Ed Young, the amazing Chinese illustrator, told me that Yolen in Chinese means little bell that rings very loudly. (I am 5'3.) He may have been pulling my leg, but I still love it.

the Cristoforos
for Christopher, that most definitely must be for you the name Cristoforos, that is pronounced idiosyncratically, crisst-O-for-ose. This is a special name that is beautiful to say aloud, and it means the one who can bear (as in carry and withstand, both)a certain kind of light. It is not light to see by, but light that helps people remember they have souls-- and not just socks and football games (smile). Seriously again, In Spanish we call such a person when they are little, Cristocito. (crisst-o-SEE-toe) Those who carry such a name are called to have special understanding of the foibles of others, even for those who cannot carry or understand these themselves. The Cristoforus may have to somewhere along the line struggle to not become mean with cynicism, to keep trying to carry the light, carry the light, pick it up again and bring it out to the world again... again
My grandmother Querida used to tell me that a person's name was also their calling; that though we might fall far short sometimes (or even often enough in my own case) of the meanings in our names, that they are like a homing signal of what to aim toward...
And yes, I have seen Jane Yolen _yo lin_ and I agree she, like a bell or drum, has a far-reaching voice in a small vessel. (smile)
