Hilda Boswell query
Is anyone familiar with a fairy tale illustrator named Hilda Boswell? I don't know her work at all, but I recently met a man who grew up with her work and wants to find out more about her.

Terri,
I don't know much about Hilda Boswell but I have a book called "Treasury of Poetry" that she illustrated, and a version of "Snow White" which I LOVE. Both in Massachusetts, so I can't look at them to find out more for you now . . . However, I do think both were published in 1955 or so. I think she worked earlier than that, maybe in the late 20s even (though I could be wrong about that). I'd love to hear anything about her too. I did a quick search on Google and there's really not much--just some bibliographic listings. Though admittedly, I don't have much time for web research this morning . . . Boy, isn't this a useful posting! Sorry.

Yes, I bought her book "the treasury of nursery rhymes" and the "treasury of fairy tales" back in the seventies for my what was then little daughter. She now wants to buy them again for her children. They are like hen's teeth in England. Any idea of where to get them nowadays?

According to
The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators which has a short listing for her:
1903 to 1976
Born in London.
Studied at Hornsey School of Art and the Regent Street Polytechnic.
She preferred watercolor as a medium and she also wrote and edited books for children.
Illustrated ony: A Childs Garden of Verses (Collins 1963)
Wrote and illustrated: Jenny's Fairy Years
(1945), The Little Birthday Horse (1950), Treasury of Fairy Tales
(Collins 1959), Treasuery of Poetry (Collins 1968) , Omnibus (Collins
1972).
It seems that somewhere there is a bibliography of her work written by Brigid Peppin (who also wrote, Fantasy, The Golden Age of Fantastic Illustration, which is a great book).
There are two mamoth dictionaries on British illustrators published by the Antique Collectors Club and edited by Alan Horne. One on the 19th C. and other on the 20th C. As they are chocked full of illustrated examples of most of the artists listed work they are lots of fun to just leaf through at random and discover a new artist that you've never heard of before or find out more about those that you do know of. Unfortunatelt there was no example of Ms. Boswell's work included in the book. However I did just discover a very nice illustration to the Linklater short story, Seal Skin Trousers for those of you interested in selchies and such...
