Daffodil Lore
Hello
I am looking for folklore and fairytales involving daffodils beyond the Narcissus story. I believe in one version of Sleeping Beauty, for instance, the heroine's name was Daffodil. Any and all references to daffodils, narcissus, and jonquils would be appreciated. Thanks!

Book
I'm so sorry, it's packed now in a box somewhere, but I do have a book called THE FOLKLORE OF PLANTS that is not difficult to find (in a bookstore, apparently not so easy in my house). There is, if I recall correctly, an entry for daffodils & narcissus in there. Sadly, I can't remember if it's just the Narcissus story, though. I imagine that's included, but possibly something else.
I do so like that book.

Daffs
The word "Daffodil" didn't come into the English language until the 1500s. Before that it was "affodyl" a corruption of "asphodel" (of Greek mythology.) And it is in asphodel-covered meadows (see Homer) that the souls of the dead wandered. Persephone, down in the land of the dead, wore a crown of the flowers.

Persephone wears this crown for it is symbolic of the one flower (life) that comes back in the spring, (often the first 'bulb' flower to do so besides snow crocus) whose leaves while laying fallow in winter, have actually fed the rhyzome under the cold ground, thereby " increasing the root" while "looking dead." Persephone IS the return of the light (sun's loger days that signals that the time of seeming deadness is over....) The little flower she bent to cup in the field (in some versions of her story) was likely signalling that it is time for the darkening, the underground time, to begin.
this was a little off topic, but perhaps it will add to the idea here...
