*Finally* Found It!
I don't know if you remember, but last year (or was it the year before?) I posted, looking for a fairy tale I'd read and loved as a child but couldn't remember the title of. It was about a princess who aged and grew younger with the waning and waxing of the moon. I finally found it - it's "Little Daylight" by George MacDonald. The book I read it in was one of a series of books called "Best in Children's Books" published by Nelson Doubleday in the late 1950s. My grandparents had a partial set, as did we. Last Sunday, I found one volume at a used bookstore and bought it. I was able to find more information about the complete series on line, including the tables of contents of all 42 (!) books. None of the titles sounded familiar so I was really beginning to think I'd imagined it. Today I did a google for "princess old woman moon" and one of the results was "Little Daylight", which was one of the stories in the series of books. Found and read the story (author listed an Anonymous) on line - and it's the one I remembered (and I like it as much as I remembered). It's a version of Sleeping Beauty. I don't know how long I'd still be searching if I hadn't found that book on Sunda, because the title "Little Daylight" wasn't familiar to me in the least - and I didn't realize it had an actual author (as opposed to being a folk tale) - and I would probably have overlooked it many times. Doing a virtual happy dance through the office!
