Call for Words: Voice and Careers
I have 2 projects going right now that I'd like to place a call for words out for. Both relate to fairy tales, folklore, mythology, and the like.

1) Voice
Due: 10/15/02
Folklore Periodical Planning List
groups.yahoo.com/group/Fo...ning_List/

Call for words and art: Since communication is a common theme in art and literature, folktale, myth, fairy tale, etc., this might be a good topic to start with. Here are some brainstorming ideas along this theme:

Voice, Silence, Mermaid, Song, Storyteller, Conteuses, Sirens, Enchanted speakers, A picture is worth a thousand words, Language, Communication, Muse; Enchanted speakers: Falada, three tears or drops of blood, bird in The Juniper Tree, harp in Twa Sisters, etc.; Sirens: madness, Mandrake/Mandragora; Communication: dance, song, art, word, sign, tokens

Let me know your thoughts. If you like, you may send works to my email (kcolantonio@attbi.com) or upload them to the Files section. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

2) Careers

This is a bit more complex. For next year's conferences, I'd like to have on hand a booklet, pamplet, or something that lists different careers that relate to fairy tales, folklore, mythology, etc. Here's a link to an old post:

Careers available...

If anyone would like to write essays, articles, poems, create art pieces that can express how an individual with these interests can find a career that they would enjoy, that would be superb! Any other thoughts or musings?

Sorry these are so thrown together. I've been meaning to send out a full call for a while, but illness and life have had the best and worst of me.

A few thoughts on Voice
Kerrie

The act of speech (or more specifically, the lack of voice) has been one of the long-term feminist issues in regard to Fairy Tales... Think Silent Princess here.

If you like, I could generate a short article that focuses on this subject. I also have several poems and / or short stories that "correct" this problem by utilizing first-person character POV. In ~Mirror, Mirror~ (for instance) Snow White speaks. Cinderella has her say in ~Post-Ball Trauma~ Well, you get the idea.

Many other writers have addressed this as well... Perhaps the initial article can lead to a designated feature that explores work of this nature?

(Gee, it might even be a good topic for a book!)

Essay and examples...
Donna,

I think it's a great idea, having an article/essay, then stories, poems, etc. as examples to follow. One example that comes to mind is Tolkien's "Tree and Leaf," where his essay "On Fairy Stories" is followed by "Leaf by Niggle." I think this would work well with art also, with an essay either before or after a few pieces, or as a running caption. More ideas!

Re: Essay and examples...
It was suggested I narrow the topic for "Voice" a bit more. Here is a breakdown of five categories under the theme:

"Silent Princesses"- If I'm interpreting Donna's suggestion correctly, I see this as princesses and other heroines who have been in the background for the bulk of their tales and now wish to be heard.

Repetition- This can include characters such as Echo from Greek mythology or scoldings such as in "The Goose Girl" ("If your mother only knew,/Her heart would surely break in two.")

Enchanted Speakers- There are plenty of examples of these, such as the 3 drops of blood and the head of Falada in "The Goose Girl," the bird in "The Juniper Tree," the singing bone in "The Singing Bone," or the human harp in "The Twa Sisters."

Language- Anything that has to do with linguistics. Perhaps the hero speaks a different language and none can understand. Perhaps the heroine is mute, like in "The Little Mermaid." Perhaps languages have been learned as a test, as in "The Three Languages."

Oracular- Prophesy, warnings, etc are the key here, such as in the oracle at Delphi, Orpheus, and that wonderful prediction of the fall of Troy. Or even the curse of the 13th fairy in "Sleeping Beauty." Perhaps wishes could come in here as well, with Snow White and the little boy in "The Juniper Tree" being wished for as being white as snow, red as blood, and black as ebony wood.

Let me know what you think, if these are still too broad, or now too narrow.

I'd love to - I don't have any stories on hand that fit - and I'm right at this very moment going insane from having an art show go up, a dental appointment, and another batch of fused glass beads due at the bead store that I need to get ready...
All due today! So i'm stretching fabric over a display thing as I type...
Anywho, I'll look and see, after i get this stuff done. I may have a peice of art for you. I'll direct a friend who writes to this thread...

glass beads
JaNell - do you have a website or another place where you show your beads? (Another obsession of mine!)

OT Beads
Not yet - but I did ask a friend if I could weedle/bribe/rent some of her table at WorldFantasy, if you're going there...
No word yet on that.
I'll be getting a website up soon (read: maybe by the end of the year), with a shopping cart. I *do* have posters for sale (completely unrelated to beads) at Zazzle. My littlest has a couple there, too.
