Brian Jacques' Redwall series
Not quite fairy tales in a way (although to me they are) but has anyone read these books?
They are anthropomorphic tales of woodland creatures, living in an abbey.

I haven't read them, but both of my two older boys (9 and 8) are
reading books in the series now. They love them.

I read a number of them a long time ago when they were first coming out. But rather like the long line of "Anne of Green Gables" books, I ran out of steam and couldn't keep up. I don't think I got more than three or four books in. I liked what I read, though.

I read...
...Redwall, and liked it, but the resultant multitude of sequels seemed daunting. I know that kids really like the series, so it must offer something. And that's a good thing. I did read Neil Hancock's unique anthropomorphic "Circle of Light" series back in the 80's. Sort of "Wind in the Willows" on a Tolkein level. He has sinced dropped out of sight and I can barely find mention of him on the web. Too bad.

Niel Hancock
I haven't read his books and don't particularly plan to, but I checked on Amazon once and discovered that he has a peculiar way of spelling his name. Perhaps a search with "Niel Hancock" will yield more results?
I really enjoyed what I read of the Redwall series, but I have this
problem in which I get bored of a series-- no matter how good it
is-- past about six books. I've since tried to read other animal-oriented
fantasies, like Robin Jarvis's The Dark Portal, and been completely
unable to get into them. However, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
will always be one of my favorites.

Actually, I did a check after posting, just out of curiosity. Thankfully the computer generally corrects you if only one letter is out of place, which it did. I found some of his books listed. I also found the author's website, which he has added since the last time I checked. Evidently he is writing more now and his past books are going to be republished, which is a good thing, because they are impossible to get now except in second hand bookstores and on amazon.com!
