The Sin Eater
I'm writing a story in colloboration with a friend and one of the themes I want to work with in it is that of the Sin Eater in myth and folklore. If anyone could point me in the direction of some good sources of information or narratives about this personage, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,

Sin Eaters
Christopher,
There was a brief discussion about a year or so ago here about the sin eaters. It was not particularly involved, but you may find something useful. I think you can search the SurLaLune archives for it.
I wrote a short tale last year that hinges a bit on the idea of the sin eaters ("A Cuckoo Tale"). I did some really casual web research on tales about sin eaters for it, and did not turn up much at all. I'll be curious to hear what you find!

sin eaters
there is a page in women who run with the wolves about sin eaters. Some of the hags of tales can be understood as ones who carry the negative projections of the village for instance, yet becuase of their immense healing qualitites, they seem to be able to offer healing and help to the villages at the same time/
Scapegoat and sin eater are interesting concepts to contrast with one another too.
all best,

sin eaters
Are sin eaters pretty much the same thing as 'demon eaters'?

Sin eaters
I read a book once, I think it was in fact called "The Sin Eater". Can't remember too much detail, but I think it was set in a remote mountian village (Wales or Scotland, maybe?)
Anyway, the Sin Eater of the title, had to go to the people who had died and eat a meal that had been placed on the dead person's chest. The Sin Eater was an outcast in his village, but needed too, or who else would take away their sins?
When the Sin Eater died, he had no-one to take away his sins, and so a boy ate the meal and became the next sin eater, becoming an outcast and the cycle started again. (Can't remember whether he was just a village boy or his son.)
