LOTR on this week's Sound & Spirit
Fairy tale and Folklore are just part of the mix on this week's national public radio show hosted and written by your humble servant, as we explore them and the music that inspired and was inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien's work.

S&S LOTR
I'm sad to say that I only got to hear bits of the LOTR Sound & Spirit in the car after picking up my kids from their grandparents' hours earlier than expected because my step-father had to go to the ER...
What I heard was wonderful, and entrancing, and gave us something to focus on during the car trip home.
Good news being that Paul, my step-father, was released several hours later and will be going back to the doctor later this week, and I'm sure I'll be able to get a copy of that episode somewhere.
I'm a bit ashamed to say that, after I dropped the kids off at home (the oldest being plenty big enough to watch himself and my little one) I drove right to the ER parking lot, where I sat listening for a few more minutes before walking in the hospital to what could have been me losing another parent...
You don't know how comforting your voice has been over the years.

Journeys for us all...
Oh dear! I hope all is well and he improves ten-fold! If you can listen online- there are some radio stations that air S&S Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday. Maybe you can catch it then.
Ellen, the preview in July was great- listening to the full show, with my fiance sitting next to me, was spectacular! Jansen recognised several of the songs himself, especially the Fox song! (His father used to read it, then learned how to sing it, for him and his sister when they were young!) It was indeed a great comfort to hear your voice and words, as JaNell said. And Michael's story, about reading the books to his son- endearing!
Will you be offering the series (or individual shows) on cd someday?

I want my Sound & Spirit!
I traced the links, but it seems it is only playing in Northern Wis. Help! Are cassette copies (or cds )available?

Sound & Spirit (no) tapes
I'm sorry, but we are not allowed to sell copies of the show, since each hour involves so many copyrighted musical recordings that simply tracking down all the rights would take us weeks! (Public Radio has a blanket agreement with ASCAP that allows us broadcast rights only.)
However, it turns out it's perfectly legal to tape the show off the air for personal use, and I know that many S&S listeners do tape it. Mind you, I don't have their names & addresses....
I've always wondered why someone doesn't create a S&S bulletin board to share reactions to the program, and maybe set up a tape cooperative. (Our otherwise useful and productive website - www.wgbh.org/spirit - has no board, because we don't have the personnel [i.e. budget] to administer one to WGBH's exacting "please don't sue us!" standards.)
Janell, I'm glad to hear that your family is doing better - glad the Power of Radio was there when you needed it! It was lovely meeting you at WFC.
Chris, I should also mention that you can listen to S&S online on virtually any of the 125+ stations that broadcasts it - you're basically listening to the radio on your computer - it can be quite addictive tuning in to other cities (I recommend KRVS in Lafayette, Louisiana!).....

for the computer impaired?
for those of us who need the "listen to radio on internet book for dummies," could you please tell us HOW we listen to radio on our computers. I have a macintosh, and know I need some kind of software? is that right?
And then what do I do?
I assume the url is the "dial" so to speak...is that right?
Are the radiio programs archived and then you "download them"?
or are they live and you somehow listen in?
If you listen to radio on computer, can you also work on the computer at the same time?
Sorry to ask such remedial things. Appreciate any help you can give.

Oh, dear, I'm afraid I'm not the one to answer all these questions - as Delia always puts it, I'm afraid I know only a few simple spells..... Here's what I can tell you:
Usually if you go to a station's website (try wgbh.org, wnyc.org or whyy.org for examples) and click on LISTEN, it will tell you what you need to do next (including downloading any software you lack). Then you can listen to whatever is on their air at the time, and use your computer at the same time, assuming it's adequate to the task. What you're listening to is not downloaded. Though if you go to NPR.org they will let you call up past programs to download, I believe.
Anyone who's better at computers want to try and do better?
