Klezmer Nutcracker
I just wanted to let fellow SurLaLunatics know that I'll be performing my subversion of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" with Shirim Klezmer Orchestra in Boston, NYC and Philadelphia over the next 3 weekends. I narrate a story that I wrote, "The Golden Dreydl" - about a little girl named Sara, not Clara, who goes to a modern Chanukah party, not a 19c Christmas party, where her mysterious and powerful AUNT gives her the magical gift of a golden dreydl that is, of course, more than it appears......
Fortunately, even if you can't get to a live performance, the show will also be broadcast on many public radio stations over the holiday season - check local listings.
And even more fortunately, a commercial recording has also been

Those are the hard facts, and I hope I'm not being too forward here. It's the kind of thing that tends to fly under the radar of folklore/fantasy readers..... I'm also seizing it as an opportunity to talk to the public about the value of myth - and the ways folklore can be used in modern art - a local paper did a really nice interview last week, and I got some good licks in!

Why, thank you, Laura! Hi, Nalo!
We did *2* very fun performances today in Boston at the Coolidge Corner Theatre - my band has finally convinced me to go out and get a "head mike": I look like a telephone operator, and feel like Madonna onstage! It's made a huge difference in my ability to move when I narrate: now I can really become the different characters using body language... great fun!
Next weekend is Philadelphia, the week after is NYC. I forget each year just how much I love to do this....
I also love getting to meet the kids who come to the show.... this year's highlights were a little girl who solemnly informed me that she was going to listen to the show (on CD) "over and over and over" ....and a 10-yr-old who'd written to tell me (after the S&S LOTR show) that she loved LOTR, too - so I invited her to the performance. While her father went on (proudly) about how she just makes things up out of whole cloth and books she's read, and he has no idea how she does it or where she gets it because it's certainly not anything he could imagine doing, she looked at me with the glowing eyes of someone who sees an adult doing something she yearns to do, and knows now that it's possible.
