A most unusual artist & classic tales
Ebay is the source of all manner of whimsical, unexpected knowledge that can lead down delightful paths. Yoshitaka Amano, the artist who did _Sandman: Dream Hunters_ with Neil Gaiman, has also done some fairy tale work. While some of his stuff contains classical Japanese motifs, I also found an Ebay auction for his book _Maerchen_, from 2000 (that should be spelled with the German umlaut). It's in Japanese, but apparently features an assortment of fantastical tales, including Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, The Snow Queen, Snow White, Pinocchio, and others. Has anyone ever seen this book? I believe I shall have to have it. Perhaps a translation exercise to motivate me to learn? :-) Those of you in New York or near Las Vegas could check out exhibitions he's got running this year.
In 1993, he "produced first stained glass for the Kimie Imura Fairy Art Museum in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan" (quoted from his website). Here’s the site, which is in English, for the museum:

1996 saw Yousei (Fairies) – "This series of illustrations from Celtic legends is one of the origins of Amano's fascination with fairies. Here, he collaborates with Kimie Imura, professor at Meisei University in Japan and specialist in Celtic lore, to create original visual work based on Imura's research."
It's truly a shame his stuff doesn't translate well to the Net. You just lose so much detail and richness -- true of all art, but strikes him particularly, I feel.
I'm off to bed, stupidly late and surrounded by glorious new plunder (ie, books) .....
