The Lady of Shalott as a Fairy Tale?
I have to do an English essay on how The Lady of Shalott, by Alfred Lord Tennyson is like a fairy tale. The 3 similarities I picked are the whole mystery, spell, curse theme that is present in many fairy tales is also found in the story, Temptation (lancelot), and that the story has a moral like fairy tales do. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions, pointers or good fairy tale references (preferably on the net, cause my teacher is on a technology kick) that I could use. Thanks a lot.

Re: The Lady of Shalott as a Fairy Tale?
That sounds like an interesting project! One thing I'd be careful about, though, is claiming that "fairy tales have a moral" -- that's a trifle shaky. Many fairy tales can be told as if there was some kind of coherent moral (i.e., be nice, obey your parents or your husband, etc.), but far more often, the moral points that can be extracted from a given tale are ambiguous or contradictory, especially when dealing with oral material, which can be blatantly subversive.
Something you may want to check out is the motif of the confined princess; there are innumerable stories which show a woman locked in a castle or tower, or trapped under the power of a spell, "Rapunzel" being a famous example. The website this message board is attached to, SurLaLune, is an excellent place to start. Also, check out D.L. Ashliman's Folk and Fairy Tale site; this is the link to the "Rapunzel" page:

Follow the links at the bottom of that page, and browse around the entire site -- you'll find lots of useful info. Good luck!

Old topic: "Locked up ladies..."
I actually started a thread a couple years ago on the subject of "locked up ladies" with initial reference to Rapunzel and the Lady of Shalott:
../../2000/jun2000/lockedup_ladies.html
Hope this helps!

You know, Kerrie,
I wonder if "Locked-up Ladies" wouldn't be a good panel topic for next year's WisCon.
Terri? Midori? What do you think?

YES!
Please! Since Rapunzel and it's variants are my personal favorites, I would love to hear you all speak on this idea. My little head is already spinning with the possibilites for next year.

Locked Up Ladies
Greg,
Fantastic idea. I'd attend, participate, anything. So many possibilities. There's a Yiddish tale where a girl locks herself up high above ground, and refuses to get free--is that the equivalent of Madonna saying, in defense of one of her videos, on Nightline about a decade ago, "I chained myself to the bed!"

Ooooo, may I do a performance?! I'd have to prepare it now, of course,
or maybe as I go along with the wedding planning. My hair is so
long at this point, I think I could pull off a Rapunzel related
piece, with others thrown in. Mmmmm, time to brainstorm!
