Your mission, should you choose to accept it...
I've been asked by my english prof to write a modern fairytale in poetic form. as a start, I've written what I think is a fairy tale and now I have to translate it. I think that I am still unclear about several things: The basic definition of a fairytale, the main elements, the purpose of the fairy tale, and I'm also worried that maybe a fariytale needs an ancient tradition to qualify it as a fairytale?
My story has talking/intelligent inanimate objects, a quest to find the meaning of life, an almost impossible ordeal, its own mythology, and overall, it just feels to me like a a fairytale should.
Any advice or suggestions?
PS, the archives of this site have been very helpful, thanks, I'll put in my bibliography.

I think that this sounds more like an epic. Fairy tales in my mind focus more on a specific issue -- abandonment, incest, coming of age, and so on. That doesn't mean that I think a fairy tale can't be rich and full, but narrowing down the elements seems to better follow the folklore tradition. Have you written the one line description yet? (This fairy tale is about...) If you can do that, then I suppose you're ready.

p.s. Terri has a wonderful site chock full of fairy tale poems. Have you looked at that? (www.endicott-studio.com)

This fairytale is about..
the circular journey of Ike the raindrop.
I guess it is sort of epic, She wants 8 pages.
I checked out that site, it was helpful.
