Thumbelina-the missing link
I think a vital character is missing from the "kick-ass"
heroine list and that is Thumbelina. In the versions I have read
it seems to me that she is the only girl who isn't looking for a
husband and just happens to marry the fairy prince. Also its the
only true fairytale i know of with actual fairies. I've always loved
this story myself because of the friendship between the girl and
the Robin. Thumbelina takes care of herself so well.
All coments welcome.

Fairies in fairy tales
Actually, quite a few fairy tales have fairies in them besides Thumbelina. Many of the French Salon tales have fairies in them, i.e., Sleeping Beauty has the good and bad fairies, there is the story of the Faires in which one sister gets frogs and toads and another flowers and gems. Those were the first two that popped into my head.
As for Thumbelina, she does show spunk although she is also somewhat a victim of circumstances. Perhaps what is most admirable about her is she is set on her adventure in part to avoid unwanted marriages, and in choosing her own mate, gets the best deal.

I stand corrected
Your right its not the only story with fairies. What do you think about her stature as metaphor. How come was ahe the size of a pixie without being one, do you think?
