This is a very long shot, but...
Does anyone know what this book might be called? I read it years ago and I can't remember the title or the author.
It is set in the near distant future, where a young Irish woman is being given away in marriage (called a Joining in the book) to a boorish farmer who she doesn't love.
She goes back in time and meets the heroes of Irish folklore such as Fionn McCool. There are giants and faeries and all manner of fantastic creatures.
A lot of the action takes place in and around the Mourne Mountains. It is an adult book, not children's and I wish I could remember what it was called as I would love to read it again.
Thanks,
Annette.

Re: This is a very long shot, but...
I stumbled across this a while back, it seems pretty similar, but I don't remember the "joining" part, and it has two young men traveling back in time.
You might enjoy it though.

Hmm, more like "Connecticut Yankee" as I look at it again,
good luck on the search...
