Little Otik
I was wondering if anyone has seen or was aware of Czech-film-maker Jan Svankmajer's latest work. "Little Otik" just opened at a theater in Philadelphia, and if it comes to a theater near you it is worth the effort to see. It's based (so the accompanying material says) on an eastern European fairy tale in which a childless couple adopt a grotesquely human-shaped tree root as their baby. The root comes to life and, as with changeling creatures in general, wreaks havoc. In the case of Svankmajer's film, it is an all-devouring creature.
If you've seen any of his previous work, you'll know how weird, disturbing and grotesque it is. He combines stop-motion, puppetry, and live action. Prior to this he's done various films, including a version of Faust and one of Alice in Wonderland.

Great minds think alike...
I actually posted about this a while back- I would love to see it, but life is so crazy and I no longer live near the theaters that might play it. I'd love to hear if anyone else has seen it as well!

I liked his "Alice", but not "Faust" so much... I'll still try to see this if it shows up near me.
Have you seen the Dave Borthwick's "The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb"? If you like Svankmajer, I think you'd enjoy it.
